Ba Hospitality And Tourism Management Tourism Essay Example

Ba Hospitality And Tourism Management Tourism Essay Singapore used to trust on fabricating industries such as electronics, oil boring equipment, crude oil refinement, gum elastic merchandises and ship mending. From the beginning of 2010, Singapore has changed its focal point on emphasise more on service industry. There are two freshly opened casino-resorts: Resorts World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands, the Resort World Sentosa was the first casino in Singapore ; it opened on the 14th February 2010. Two months subsequently on the 27th April 2010, the 2nd casino, Marina Bay Sands that was built by US-based Las Vegas Sands, opened ( Lau 2010 ) . Harmonizing to PESTEL frame theoretical account to analysis the Singapore IR industry, foremost of all from the political position, for many old ages, the authorities has resisted calls to put up casinos in Singapore ( Aristotle 2010 ) . On 18 April 2005, the Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced the Cabinet s determination to develop two IRs at Marina Bayfront and Sentosa. In his address, PM Lee explained the alteration in the authorities s long standing policy with respects to casinos, due to concern with losing fight in economic system and touristry to other widely distributed metropoliss ( CASA Veneracion 2012 ) . In order to take down the hazard for Singaporeans acquiring addicted to chancing, the Singapore authorities requires an entrance fee of $ 100 on each Singapore citizens when they enter the casino ( CNNG 2010 ) . With the gap of the Integrated Resorts in Singapore, has led this multi-racial society to a greater degree. By conveying people form a broad assortment of topographic points and civilizations together, aliens and local people learn about each other, their differences, and their similarities and make common apprehension. But at the same clip, there are several groups, including the Muslim and Christian communities and societal militants, express their disapproval to the casino ( Palmer 2011 ) . Many concerns over the negative societal impact of casino gaming every bit good as gap of doors to unwanted activities including money laundering, harlotry, and organized offense ( Wong 2009 ) . Peoples starts to worried about the safety issues and the repute of Singapore since it used to be Word s most safety metropolis . Since the two IR opened, it brings a batch of benefit to Singapore, revenue enhancement gross and tourers are increased dramatically. Through research I found that Resorts World Sentosa recorded 149,000 visitants of the casino in the first hebdomad after the gap ( Google News 2010 ) . Equally good as 857,000 visitants arrived and visited Singapore in February for the first clip, which is addition of 24.3 per centum in comparing to the same moth in the recent twelvemonth ( Straitstimes 2010 ) . This figures shows that the touristry industry in Singapore is get downing to better. Additionally, tourers came to Singapore in March has increased by 17.5 per centum, it was the best recorded for the month of March ( Gossling 2003 ) . Harmonizing to the statistics, hotel tenancy is about 85 per centum, reported by Singapore Tourism Board ( Gossling 2003 ) . From the engineering position, reported by the Singapore News, they spent 1000000s of dollars on green engineerings and sustainable edifice constructs to conserve resources, such as Resorts World Sentosa, transplanted 900 trees affected by building work. It is now replanting them- along the streets of Hollywood and New York- within its Universal Studio subject park. The Resorts World Sentosa besides has Singapore s largest solar installing that can bring forth over 500,000 kWs per hr of energy a twelvemonth ( Wong 2009 ) . In general, casino development in Singapore is a necessary immorality, which in some instances assisting Singapore to switch off from fabricating sectors to service-based economic system. Casino development in Singapore is merely a start, there is still a long manner to travel and it is a immense long-run investing. The Monte Carlo Resort and Casino is a megaresort hotel and casino on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, USA. It is owned and operated by MGM Resorts International. As of 2010, Monte Carlo has an AAA-Four-Diamond evaluation ( Macy 2011 ) . Land was broken for the hotel in March 1995. It was originally known as the Grand Victoria . The palatial manner was a reminiscent of the Belle Epoque, which is how the Gallic refer to the architecture of the Victorian epoch in England. After much unfavorable judgment by MGM Grand functionaries, it was shortened to Victoria and so changed to Monte Carlo . Monte Carlo was built as a joint venture between Mirage Resorts and Circus Circus Enterprises, and cost US $ 344 million to construct. The resort sits on 44 estates, occupied by the Dunes Hotel until its destruction in October 1993. The Monte Carlo opened to the populace on June 21, 1996, at 12:01 ante meridiem, following invitation-only VIP pre-opening jubilation the anterior twenty-four hours, including a pyrotechnic show ( Kathleen 2008 ) . Harmonizing to PESTEL frame theoretical account to analysis the ground Monte Carlo built in Las Vegas, from societal position, Las Vegas is an internationally celebrated major resort metropolis for chancing, shopping, and all right dining. The metropolis measures itself as The Entertainment Capital of the World, and is celebrated for its amalgamate hotel-casinos and associated amusement. A turning retirement and household metropolis, Las Vegas is the 31st-most population at the 2010 nose count of 583,756. In 1931 the great depression in the United States, in order to hold economic troubles, Nevada parliament passed chancing legal measure, Las Vegas became a Las Vegas, and rapid development ( Land 2004 ) . The other ground Monte Carlo built in Las Vegas, from legal position, Las Vegas construct in 1905, Nevada decided to do chancing become legal calling, one time this proclamation established, Charleston amusement and decease valley national exhibition hall is really representative. From that minute, Las Vegas on the name of spread, it has 250 casinos and more than 60000 slot machines . Now the Las Vegas has the universe s top resort hotel, and the universe first-class large-scale public presentations and hi-tech amusement installations ( TOG 2005 ) . From the beginning of 1993 in Las Vegas, the tourer semen to Las Vegas all of a sudden jump a batch. In add-on, Nevada have jurisprudence, people who at least 21 old ages old and upward, to let imbibe intoxicant and gaming ( Baidu 2012 ) . The gambling industry contributed to the development of touristry, the amusement industry. In order to maintain the economic system stable development, the chancing commitment brand of rigorous self-discipline mechanism, to those investors strict censoring, to casino rigorous supervising, one time they found the job, the parties will neer let in the local concern and kick the name from bookmaking list off ( Baidu 2012 ) . In order to pull tourers, societal public security direction is really good, the people who win the first award, if necessary, will be by two constabularies escort to any topographic point in the United States at place. Merely Nevada jurisprudence allows the sex trade legal province, but in Las Vegas state prohibitory sex trade dealing in order to keep societal order. Form economic position, Monte Carlo is the first hotel owned by MGM physique in Las Vegas and in at that place, the metropolis economic rely on touristry industry, each twelvemonth attract 38.9 million visitants, all these factors brings the rich net income for the urban economic system ( Shimp 2010 ) . Harmonizing to a study by Moody s Investors Service published in March of 2012, there are positive tendencies for the metropolis of Las Vegas ; 38.9 million visitants in 2011, stand foring a 4.3 % addition over 2010. $ 6.068 billion in bet oning grosss on the strip in 2011, a healthy 5.1 % addition over 2010 every bit good as hotel tenancy increased by 3.4 % in 2011, the first addition since 2007. Through the research, there is a study by Vegas.com shows that tenancy rates for belongingss along the Strip should around 95 % ( HMG 2012 ) . Las Vegas will ever be a top tourer finish. The metropolis may be losing some concern to the Asiatic gaming centre Macao, but they still attract close to 40 million visitants yearly who infuse one million millions of dollars every twelvemonth into the local economic system ( HMG 2012 ) . The casino in Monte Carlo is a immense topographic point which provide Slots Machines, Table Games, Poker Room, etc. Harmonizing to Montercarl.com, Monte Carlo is slot machine Eden. For each casino on norm and an mean twenty-four hours of the 3rd one-fourth is $ 108,000. In Monte Carlo, the norm of casino makes about 1 million dollars a dark ( Lee 2011 ) . But form the negative side, casino besides conveying negative effects to the people. Since 1998, Las Vegas every twelvemonth 282-292 people commit suicide, an norm of 100000 people dead, this figures shows that Las Vegas is the top self-destruction rate. Some of the gambler straight from casino high-rise honkytonk off. The ground is because of self-destruction in Las Vegas chancing lose excessively much. In order to maintain the economic system stable development, chancing commission devising of rigorous self-discipline mechanism, to investors rigorous censoring, maintain an oculus on the casino operation, supervising the casino operation, one time found the job, that people will neer let participate in the local concern and will do his name clearly form the list. An Analysis of Kristian Leven Photography in London Essay

An Analysis of Kristian Leven Photography in London - Essay Example This is unique from other wedding competitors that provide photography services with specific manufactured (posed) shots. Kristian Leven is able to stand out from competitors with his naturalistic approach to wedding photography that better captures special events and moments as they occur. 1.1 Methodology Research was gleaned for the report utilising a qualitative methodology, involving an open-ended interview structure with the sole proprietor, Kristian Leven. The interview occurred on April 5, 2013 and was scheduled for 45 minutes. Leven was proposed questions on such concepts as motivation, funding sources, problems that occur in daily business operations, the social environment, and the entrepreneurial marketing mix. Findings from the interviews were compared to theoretical secondary literature on entrepreneurship and small business management to determine correlations between theory and actual business practice; or to identify dissimilarities between theory and actual business management. 2.0 Funding sources for Kristian Leven Research indicates that credit cards are the most common funding source for entrepreneurs, due to tightened restrictions with banking institutions and other lenders associated with the credit crunch of 2007 and 2008 (Schmith 2008). Leven indicated that he achieved start-up funding by networking with family members in order to obtain an initial co-signed personal loan for ?5000. Leven further supplemented this funding for the start-up venture with a credit card by which he was able to procure equipment and initial inventories not covered by the personal loan that was utilised to set up a storefront. Leven had considered seeking out a private investor, however he was concerned about the potential of contractual agreements being established that guaranteed shared profitability. Leven trusted in his ability to grow the business revenues early that would provide him with the capital necessary to launch a successful photography business. Leven fit the profile of entrepreneurs that must rely on credit cards as a relevant funding source and networking with family members to achieve start-up capability. Leven had submitted a formal business plan to bankers when he was just 19 years old, but his plan was rejected as the lenders believed he was too young and inexperienced to successfully manage the business. Today, Leven is proud to announce an annual cash flow position of over ?200,000. 3.0 Networking Networking is, according to Leven, one of the most fundamental success factors for how Kristian Leven Photography has experienced growth and gained a positive brand reputation with satisfied customers. Leven does not consider his family members to be viable networks for operating or managing the business, or in improving its position. Leven had personal experience with a family-operated business during his childhood in which many disputes about operations and financing were present. This ties in closely with the theoretica l literature in which Johanisson and Monsted (1997) indicate there is no evidence available indicating that personal network capacity contributes to the success of the small business. Instead, Leven relies on professional networking, which are contacts that are developed through business operations. Leven indicated that nearly 80 percent of his business growth is attributed to word-of-mouth advertising that stems from satisfied clients with personal experien

Perspectives in Human Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1

Perspectives in Human - Research Paper Example I must say, I didn’t understand many principles that my family stood for, but I always tried to reason them out with a positive presumption. I was brought up amongst these ideals, and I was on my way to becoming a helf-decent Paxton myself. But things have changed a lot since my first semester in College. Growing up in the Paxton family, the first thing I was taught was to sing the glory of god and his creations. Not a day passed without my mother reading out a verse from the Bible before I went to bed. Sometimes, these verses would manifest themselves into biblical dreams. The holidays brought the entire family together and it would be a refresher course of all the family ideals. The eldest son always joined the forces. Serving the nation was a family mandate. But in a family full of ex-service men, the true heroes were the war veterans. Like Uncle Avi, who served during Vietnam. I was always convinced that My Brother Franklin would also join the marines and also doubted if h e’d ever return. The very concept of patriotism was now muddled with the hatred I had brewed towards wars and conflicts. The Paxtons also have strong preferences. We never employed Mexicans in our gardens, which meant ours’ was the dullest garden in the neighborhood. ... My family is the dearest thing to me. And I have always aspired to be the ideal Paxton. I am almost certain that for it is the most important thing to me. However, experiences that I have had this semester have completely shaken the very foundations of what I believed. This semester I learned many things. Not all of them were in line with what I always grew up learning. It can be very mind-boggling at times, when your very constitution is challenged by something new. It is like trusting someone all your life and learning one fine day, that the person was a lie. Honestly, I’d have preferred to be in that hypothetical situation than the predicament that I was in a few weeks ago. Mainly because it was my prerogative to understand, accept the latest developments and embrace change. And I have always found change to be the most uncomfortable thing. I guess the seeds were sown deep by my family. One of the things that I learnt this semester was that every human being is born with a set of rights that are inalienable. This means that we are born with some rights which cannot be taken away by anybody. Our Bill of Rights only lists these rights out. It was strange for me to believe that we always had these rights with us. Like an inherent part of our body. I always thought that people spoke, behaved and lived the way their parents did. So if I ever met a person who condemned our Country, I would think badly about his parents or family and wonder why they never disciplined him. Similarly, if someone was a homosexual, I’d wonder why his parents never sent him to the doctor. Now I have become aware that our families, societies and countries are not the reason why we choose to behave or express

Possible Effects Of Global Warming Essay Example for Free

Possible Effects Of Global Warming Essay If the global temperature swells by another 7 degrees, then it may result in melting of polar ice which may result in about a 3 to 4 foot increase in sea levels. If such thing happens, then many low lying areas in the world especially Bangladesh, Netherlands, Guam, Indonesia, Maldives and Sri Lanka could be engulfed by sea waters. Increase in global temperature may trigger the spread of dreadful diseases like Malaria, Virus fever, dengue fever and other sub-tropical diseases. Ever increasing temperature may upset weather patterns all over the world , causing starvation due to drought in prime food –producing regions namely South Asia , sub-Saharan Africa and tropical Latin America. Due to unprecedented increase in temperature, the whole gamut of species of animals and plants could be wiped out. 7. MAJOR PLAYERS OF GLOBAL WARMING: U. S. A is not only a foremost economy of the world but also the largest consumer of fossil fuels and naturally, it is the biggest producer of greenhouse gasses, comprising of more than 20% of the world’s carbon dioxide emission which is about 5 billion metric tons. Being the most industrialized economy, U. S. A is heavily depending on coal, oil and natural gas for its energy needs and hence U. S. A government is rather reluctant to initiate any appropriate steps to limit the greenhouse gas emissions and charges that Arrhenius theory is only a myth. U. S. A is averse to initiate any immediate action restraining the use of fossil fuels or to limit such use as they fear it would have long term effect on its economy. According to Global Climate Change Coalition, an industry group which is vehemently opposing prescribing mandatory limits on greenhouse gas emissions as it would result in the ruining of economy. Further , a study pursued by the coalition group forecasts that if U. S. A pursues some measures on restricting its greenhouse gas emission , then it would result about a 3% decline in U. S gross domestic product by 2010, resulting in a fall of 25% in the growth rate of American’s standard of living. Fig 1: Source: Pew Centre on Global Climate Change, December 2004. 8. PREVENTIVE MEASURES: An international treaty namely ‘The Kyoto Protocol ‘was adopted in Kyoto, in Japan in 1997 mainly to curb the emissions of greenhouse gasses. The Kyoto Protocol has prescribed mandating limits on carbon emissions which took effect in 2005 nearly after eight years of it was introduced. Regrettably, U. S. A, the world’s top carbon emitter has yet to ratify the Kyoto Protocol. Some Energy companies and economists have proposed to introduce taxing carbon as an enticement to tempt both the industries and consumers to use low carbon emitting fuels. Gases like Chlorofluorocarbons [CFC] are man made ones and this gas was used as propellants in aerosol containers, as refrigerants and also being used as a solvent in the manufacture of computer chip. It has been discovered that CFC were mutilating the stratospheric ozone layer thereby permitting majority of the sun’s destructive ultraviolet radiation to reach the Earth. The World CFC manufacturers have agreed to phase out their production of CFC by signing 1987 Montreal Protocol on Substances that deplete the Ozone layer. It is to be observed that the man made gasses like CFC is damaging the Ozone layer only very little and the major culprit is the carbon dioxide. Further felling the trees also contribute the level of CO2 high in the atmosphere as green trees helps to remove the gasses from the atmosphere or to maintain equilibrium. During the May 2005, New Zealand had introduced â€Å"carbon taxes’ mainly to dissuade excessive use of carbon oriented fuels. Thus, New Zealand had imposed about 6% to home electricity consumption and 9% for business energy cost. By 2012, all signatories to Kyoto Protocol should reduce their GHG emissions to less than 5% which is below 1990 levels. Likewise, The European Union had introduced a regional cap –and-trade policy to make it convenient for high emitting EU countries to oblige. 9. ADVANTAGES OF LIMITING THE EMISSION: Some U. S industries, though initially opposed to prescribe caps on emission, later considered that the stricter policy as not only environmentally essential but also potentially advantageous to economy since it will push for the invention of new technologies. Further, Title IV of the 1992 Clean Air Act demanded industries and utilities to minimize their sulfur dioxide emissions which are released by burning coal. Many companies who have exceeded their target sold their excess allowances to some companies that fall short of complying the above provision. Thus, a market in sulfur dioxide allowances materialized. The trading of these excess allowances is being conducted on the Chicago Board of Trading along with the markets for agricultural products and pork belly futures. 10. THE METHODOLOGY OF GREENHOUSE WARMING EARTH’S SURFACE: The greenhouse phenomenon is nothing about carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases discharged into the Earth’s atmosphere will trap solar heat and such trapping will warm the earth’s surface and earth’s lower atmosphere. The greenhouse gas emission effect has been explained in the following diagram: FIG 2: EFFECT OF GREEN HOUSE GAS EMISSION: Source: National Aeronautics and Space Administration. 11. CRITICS ARGUMENT AGAINST FINDINGS: Some critics like Sallie Baliunas who is Harvard University’s astrophysics argue that in the past century alone, there was an increase of just 0. 5 degree Celsius and not more than a 10 to 20 % of a degree could have been caused by human-made greenhouse gases. According to Baliunas, the 0. 5 to 1. 5 degree Celsius warming foretold by the computer simulations overstates the greenhouse effect created by the equivalent 50% buildup of carbon dioxide. Some critics argue that IPCC disclosure that there is a perceptible human influence on global climate† tosses the finding itself into air. Some critics vehemently lament that sea-level surge predictions are embellished as the temperature in polar region would still remain below freezing. Some points out those supporters have projected an illusion that global warming would result in the spread of malaria and mosquito oriented diseases. Supporters of global warming have forgotten to take into account the advanced technology available as on date like air-conditioning, mosquito repellents and mosquito coils and modern medicines have completely eradicated Malaria from the soil of U. S. A and substantially in other countries. Likewise, critics assailed a report forecasting that algal blooms amplified by warming waters would cause cholera was disparaged as unfounded one by the evidence. 12. IPCC’s FINDINGS ON GLOBAL WARMING: United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change [IPCC] has made the following revelations about global warming; ? There will be an increase of 15 to 90 centimeters in sea levels or by 6 inches to 3 feet by the year 2100. This mainly due to raising global warming which will melt polar ice sheets and the glaziers and there will be an expansion of water due to its getting warmed. ? Global warming will result in increase of extremely hotter days and there will be shrinking of cold days in general. ? There will be drastic change in weather pattern causing havoc floods like Katrina and some provinces will be engulfed by famine or droughts. ? There will be an intensity of rainfall as scientists would not predict whether severe storms and tropical cyclones would transform the intensity and location. If the sea level increases from half –foot to three feet level , then that would extensively flood the areas like parts of south Florida and southern Louisiana and would create an wide-ranging infrastructure changes in cities like Texas , Dallas , S. C , Charleston and some extent New York City. Further, regional warming trend over the past five decades has made ice shelves along the coast of Antarctica to crumple. Some supporters of the global warming argue that people would be benefit from climate change. According to World Climate Report, warmer climate will pave the way for opening up Siberia and northern Canada suitable for agriculture production, increase the rainfall globally and minimize the perils of winter driving. According to World Climate Report magazine that global warming would usher more advantages and these advantage will overtake its disadvantages. Imagine a warmer climate in poles, Siberia and in Netherlands. It would drastically reduce the energy consumption on heating, reduced clothing expenses, transportation will be less problematic and overall death rates would be at a lower level. Plants absorb the carbon dioxide through their leaves, employ it in the process of photosynthesis and then emit oxygen. Thus, the oxygen released by plant is taken up by the animals for their existence. Thus, carbon dioxide released by animals is returned to atmosphere and once again taken up by the plants as well as by oceans that envelop the Earth’s surface. 13. FUTURE ACTIONS TO BE PURSUED: United States, China and India are the three countries which have to be involved for the long-term reduction and these countries are not part of Kyoto’s Protocol first round. Since United States is not a signatory to the Kyoto’s Protocol, cutting emissions below 1990 level would be impossible to achieve. 14. ALTERNATE ENERGY: Wind energy is being employed in a large capacity in Germany and in a substantial way in countries like India, Denmark U. S, and Spain. As of today, wind energy is growing in a fast space due to technological advancement. It is to be observed that wind energy does not harm the environment and does not generate any greenhouse gases or atmospheric emission. Wind energy is named as renewable energy as it is replenishable and depends upon the sun as it is a form of solar energy. Hence, as long as sun is there, wind energy can be harnessed without any limit. Tidal energy is being harnessed to manufacture electricity also. A tidal power plant is in operation on the Rance River, an estuary of the English Channel in northwestern France since summer 1966. Tidal power plants will be most effective if the difference between high and low tides is enormous, as in Rance estuary, it is estimated that the difference is around 8. 5m or about 28 feet. Nuclear energy is a clean, competent and cost effective energy of the future. Some argue that though the nuclear energy is costly but it can be tolerated as it is a very efficient form of energy. For example, when set of uranium fuel rods is fitted in a nuclear reactor, it needs not to be replaced for many years. Further, uranium is available in plenty and its supplies are assured for many centuries ahead. As compared to fossil fuel based power plants , nuclear power plants does not emit toxic gasses in the atmosphere which ultimately responsible for global warming. It is to be remembered that a nuclear power plant does not pollute either the atmosphere or the water as compared to a coal-fired power plant.

Impact of Native Americans on the Economy

Impact of Native Americans on the Economy Alec Hallman The most popular narratives taught in our public schools are that Native American economies were strictly hunter-gathering and bartering. While this was part of the truth, some Native American economies were highly developed prior to European colonization. Gary Nash remarks that there were striking differences, between the levels of economic development of different tribes  [1]. The Pueblo people in the southwest had established an almost urban society, with apartments housing many people built into the cliff faces. Larger apartment complexes wouldnt exist in North America until 19th century New York City  [2]. In order to sustain so many people in one area, the Pueblo had developed advanced agricultural techniques, similar to those found in Euro-Asian societies  [3]. There also were trade networks greater than those found in Europe at the time, evidenced by the wide variety of trade goods uncovered in the Native American City of Cahokia  [4]. Democracy existed in Native Amer ican society prior to colonization, and was practiced, to great benefit, by the Iroquois tribe. Native Americans had a large impact on colonial economies, both positive and negative. The Europeans traded the Native Americans for skins and furs, which they would ship back to Europe for large profits  [5]. The colonists were also dependent on the Natives for agricultural produce until they could become self-sufficient  [6]. When war broke out between the colonists and the natives, it took a heavy toll on the population and economic growth of the colonies. In the end, the conflict turned in favor of the colonists as more immigrants arrived every month, and the Indian population was wasted by European diseases  [7]. The high death tolls, from fighting, disease and starvation, caused a severe shortage in the labor force of the colonies. Many of the tribes that were not wiped out were enslaved and used as agricultural labor  [8]. The colonial labor force was diverse and multifaceted. It was comprised of a mixture of European immigrants and Native Americans. There was labor demand for all ages and skills. In the north there was lumbering, fishing and shipbuilding. In the middle colonies, there was agriculture and trades like shoe-making, pottery and woodworking. In the south there was plantation agriculture  [9]. The labor force was segmented into 3 groups; free labor, slaves and indentured servants. The free labor is self-explanatory, as free natives and Europeans were part of the labor force. Free Labor wages in the colonies were relatively high compared to Europe due to the opportunity cost that was afforded the colonists. It required high wages to entice workers to come work for your firm rather than enterprising on starting their own business or owning their own land  [10]. Slavery was practiced, especially in the south, in order to meet the high demand for agricultural labor in the plantations. Defeated Native American tribes were enslaved to help meet this demand, as well as Africans from the Caribbean  [11]. The third, and most interesting part of the colonial labor force, was that of the indentured servants  [12]. Indentured servants were colonists that had signed a written agreement prior to their immigration that bought them passage to the new world. In return for the expense s of the journey, the immigrants would then be contracted to work for a certain number of days. The length of the contract was dependent on how much value the person brought to the firm that was employing them. Men in their prime were worth more than elders, literate more than the illiterate, and any other skills you had made your contract shorter. Women actually had shorter contracts than men due to the greater shortage of female labor in the colonies.[13] As wages in Europe began to rise, and the cost of transportation to the new world went down, indentured servants became more expensive to employ, and firms turned more to slavery to fill their labor needs. I think that the evidence points to the fact that the colonies were not economically exploited by the British prior to the American Revolution, despite the popular narrative to the contrary. The colonists may actually have been economically benefiting more from British rule than they were losing, and it was the ideology of being under the thumb of the King, that caused them to revolt. One of the main points against the idea of British exploitation of America is the simple fact that the standard of living was higher in the American colonies than it was in England at the time (determined by measurements of the leg bones of Americans and Europeans)  [14]. The British signed the Acts of Trade and Navigation in the 1660s which required all exports from the colonies to return through England and on British or colonial vessels. These restrictions caused increased shipping and handling costs for American firms, lowered the volume of exports and made imports more expensive  [15]. The British side of the argument was that their subsidies for shipbuilding materials and free access to British ships and crew and their global trade network more than compensated for the extra fees and handling costs. Another argument against British exploitation is that of the military protection they afforded the colonies. The British fought the French and Indian War, which ended in 1763 in defense of the colonies. Both Thomas and McClilland have done studies that estimated that the tax burden of British rule, subtracting the costs of military protection, was close to 3% of income  [16]. The British even reimbursed the colonies for 40% of the cost of the war, which was publicly financed in England. Considering that the tax burden on British citizens was 100% of income, and on the Irish was 26%  [17], the fact that the colonies paid 3% could hardly be called exploitation. Client-Server Networking Essay

What I can think of to return the computer to an operational state is troubling a video problem. It maybe relating to the graphic card and the program that may run with it. The graphics adapter may either be corrupted or installed wrong under a different version. For example if the graphic is supposed to be run on a x64 based window 7 instead of a x86 version. Making sure that your video card must have a display driver installed in order to do anything but the most basic drawing to the screen. If you’re having any problems with your video card, one of the first things you should do is download the latest display driver, uninstall the current display driver, and then install the new driver you downloaded. This could help with any other problems that may have occurred. Another thing to remember is to uninstall your current display driver before installing one. If you don’t uninstall first then you can sometimes cause some pretty obscure problems. Another potential problem solver is to try another monitor that can handle the screen resolution.

Memento and License Plate Number

Memento is a movie directed by Christopher Nolan, the story is based on the short story Memento Mori by his brother Johnathan Nolan. Memento is a story about a man who loses the ability to make new memories after he witnesses his wife being raped and murdered. The film is told in two different stories: one is in black and white and told chronologically, and the other is in color and told backwards. Leonard Shelby wakes up one night and notices his wife is missing from their bed.He hears grumbling and moaning coming from the bathroom. He proceeds to the bedroom loset and retrieves a pistol; he loads it and walks toward the bathroom. He barges into the bathroom where two guys are raping his wife. He shoots one and the other knocks him into the bathroom mirror knocking him onto the ground. Causing him to have a head injury, where he cannot make any new memories. The last thing he remembers is lying on the ground next to his wife who is wrapped in a shower curtain suffocating.Though his memory problem obstructs his ability to endure lengthy activities, Leonard manages to focus his energies on searching for the second assailant and avenging his wife's rape and murder, reminding himself of important acts by carrying a police file of the crime, taking notes and pictures, and even going so far as to tattoo the most vital details about his mission throughout his body. Along the way, a couple of characters take advantage of his revengeful and forgetful state of mind, deceiving Leonard into murdering several people other than his wife's assailant.Leonard wakes up in a motel room at the Discount Inn, stunned and muddled as to why he is there. The phone rings and Leonard answers. He starts telling the unknown caller about his circumstance, anterograde amnesia, which means he cannot create new memories. Anterograde amnesia is defined as â€Å"a selective memory deficit, resulting from brain injury, in which the individual is severely impaired on learning new informationâ₠¬ (â€Å"Memory Loss & the Brain†). He then tells the caller that he had become an insurance investigator and was assigned to Sammy Jenkins.Sammy had anterograde amnesia, and Leonard was assigned to determine if Sammy's condition was covered under their insurance policy. He tells the caller in order to deal with this circumstance a person must have a system of notes, and the drive to use them. Leonard says he has the motivation that Sammy lacked, we then ee tattooed on Leonard's chest â€Å"John G. raped and killed your wife† (Memento). He continues to tell the caller that through testing Sammy was not covered under his insurance policy because his circumstance was psychological not physical. The caller then identifies himself as Officer Gammell, he tells Leonard the second man from the night of the attack is Jimmy Grantz. Officer Gammell then tells Leonard he has set up a meeting for him and Jimmy. Leonard then heads to the lobby to meet the officer. Officer Gammell tells Leonard to call him Teddy because he is under cover. Teddy gives Leonard directions to an abandoned building outside of town. Leonard goes to the building and waits for Jimmy. Jimmy pulls up and walks inside Jimmy with a tire iron. Leonard then puts Jimmy's clothes on and dresses Jimmy in his old clothes.Leonard then drags Jimmy down the stairs and he hears Jimmy whisper â€Å"Sammy. † Leonard then begins to think how could Jimmy know Sammy? He then realizes there is no way he could be the second attacker. Teddy then pulls up outside and Leonard runs out and tells him to hurry inside someone is wounded. Once inside Leonard turns on Teddy, telling him he sent him to kill the wrong guy. Teddy tries to persuade Leonard that Jimmy was his wife's killer. Finally Teddy confesses that Jimmy Grantz was Just a drug dealer who had nothing to do with the attack on his wife.Teddy then tells Leonard his wife endured the attack and that the story of Sammy Jenkins was truly about hims elf. Teddy also tells Leonard that he was the officer that investigated the attack on his wife. â€Å"He says he believed him about the second attacker and he helped him track down and kill the real John G. over a year ago. Teddy claims that he took a picture of a happy Leonard right after the second attacker was dead† (Memento). Leonard does not recollect the murder at all. Before Leonard can forget what Teddy is telling him he burns the picture that teddy gave him.He then writes â€Å"don't believe his lies† on the back of Teddy's picture (Memento). He also writes down Teddy's license plate number as John G. ‘s license plate number. He writes himself a note to get the license plate number tattooed on him. Setting himself up to kill Teddy as the next John G. Leonard then tosses Teddys keys into the bushes, gets into Jimmy's Jaguar and drives off. While driving he sees a tattoo parlor so he stops and goes inside and roceeds to get the license plate tattooed on hi m.Teddy sees the Jaguar outside so he comes in and suggests that Leonard get out of town and put new clothes on because people are â€Å"starting to ask questions† (Memento). Leonard looks at Teddys picture in his pocket and sees â€Å"don't believe his lies† so he escapes out of the back window and drives away. He finds a coaster in Jimmy's coat pocket that says meet me at Ferdys bar, and the note is from a Natalie. So he goes to the bar and finds Natalie, he tells her about his condition and after a test she believes him. Natalie takes Leonard to her home and tells him he can stay with her.Natalie tricks Leonard into going after a man named Dodd who Natalie says has been abusing her. Leonard goes to meet Dodd to beat him up for Natalie, but when he gets into his car Teddy is waiting for him and he tries to warn Leonard about Natalie but sees the note on the back of Teddys picture so he does not believe him. Leonard goes to meet Dodd at his hotel room and beats him up and ties his hands he then throws him in the closet and calls Teddy for help. Teddy comes to Dodd's hotel room and they take Dodd to a ecluded area and convince him to leave town.Leonard goes back to Natalie's and she says she will trace the license plate number for him because he took care of Dodd for her. She gives him the information and directions to an abandoned building outside of town. Leonard puts the clues together that Teddy must be John G. and calls him to meet him at the building where Jimmy Grantz was killed a couple of days earlier. Leonard then shoots Teddy in the head.

Popular Science Article Example

Popular Science Article Example Popular Science Article – Article Example 1. Popular science article Find a popular science article relating to a topic that we have, or will cover in this semester.  Ã‚  This article can come from a newspaper (ex: New York Times Science section), magazine, popular science magazine (ex: Scientific American) or online science news website.  Ã‚  After reading this article, turn in a copy of the article or article web address along with a  1-page  document where you:1. Summarize the article and explain how it relates to the material we’ve covered (will cover) in class2. Explain what you learned by reading the article, or explain why you agree/disagree with the article.3. Explain why this article was written.  Ã‚  (In other words, why is this information important for the public?)  Obesity is one of the most daunting issues that continues to haunt the American society. Despite all the evolutions that occurred in the fitness industry, it is clear that obesity continues to plague American society. Obesity, like other health- related behaviors is one of the chief causes for disability. Obesity is not a simple disease resulted from one factor. But it is rather a chronic condition that develops as a result of genetic, behavioral and environmental factors. In addition, it is associated with heart disease, heart stroke, high blood pressure, and even cancer. Undoubtedly, obesity is sky high as two-thirds of the American population is obese. It is evident that children in this current generation has a shorter life expectancy due to high rates of obesity as opposed to children 2 decades ago, which is highly shocking. Without a doubt, obesity is a prevalent problem that is detrimental to society and must be addressed for the health and the wealth of the future generations. I completely agree with the author as she tries to warn her readers about how obesity can be a huge obstacle for the younger generation. With all the advent in the supplement industry, it is quite sad that majority of the society is obese. One of the key points I learned in this article is the fact that there is science behind nutrition that individuals can acquire. Eating the right amount of food and exercising can literally dynamically diminish the health related risks of individuals. The article was clearly written to foreshadow the future of the young generation which is constantly being bombarded with â€Å"supersized meals.† If the younger generation understands the consequences of their nutritional habits, they are more like to modify their lifestyle that can benefit their health. In addition, the younger generation understands the importance of having a good sex appeal, which can push the youth to eat healthy, exercise and adapt a healthy lifestyle. For instance, the education system and the food industry clearly promote an unhealthy eating habits couple with no physical activity for children. It is evident that these factors are key elements towards the rise of obesity rates in society, which must be addressed as society progresses to the 21st century.KOLATA, GINA. Christmas Eve Essays

Christmas Eve Essays Christmas Eve Essay Christmas Eve Essay The train is full of hundreds of people waiting for the same destination as mine. I look around to see if there are any seats available but all I see is people pushing and shoving as if they were a herd of sheeps. I could hear people muttering rude comments at each other like a crowd of bees buzzing towards me. I see a man that lives on my street, I push towards him. As I get closer I can smell a cheesy odour, remembering how awful his scent is, I slowly try to make my way away from him hoping that he doesnt see me. I hear a voice say, Next stop Bond Street I can feel all the excitement in the air, theres silence in the train, but I can hear heart beats pumping faster and faster. The train stops.Everyone runs towards the stores as if the worlds about to end. While people push and shove their way threw I get effortlessly tossed off the train. I reach a street full of department stores and food places. The Christmas decorations beautifully hang from lamp posts a nd trees. I feel the Christmas atmosphere around me, filling me with joy and excitement; lights falling from the trees make the street even brighter than before.I intend to go Subway and get a quick and easy sandwich, so I can get started with all the shopping. I look around but dont see a Subway at sight, I hear stall men shout,Get your ice cream hereGet your hot dogs hearBut none sound appealing, the smell of doughnuts attract me. I start to see shoppers with hot, creamy, mouth watering doughnuts in their hands as if it were all planned. I walk towards Zara, to see if the smell gets stronger. I hear,Get you doughnuts heeeeThe voice starts to fade away; I trace my steps back, like a detective looking for clues. I start to hear the stall man again, this time much clearer. I look to my right and there he stands just a walking distance away, calling out to me. The shoppers around me carry enormous bulging carrier bags, all advertising, Zara, Gap, and Fcuk. Theres no room to walk in be tween the market stalls. For a second I feel as if I were in India between the everyday hustle and bustle.I decide to take the anxious attitude everyone else has, like a lizard changing its colours. I barge my way through and try to get to my goal, the doughnut stall. I finally reach the stall, I feel as if I have just won a marathon.I hold the, freshly made, hot, soft as a cushion, doughnut in my hand as if it were a trophy. Just the look of it made my taste buds jump with excitement. I wait and admire the doughnut, my nose now filled with a mixture of smells as people walk pass with other types of food. My hands start to get sticky due to the icing; I hold the doughnut to my mouth and take a big delicious, chocolaty bite. My taste buds dance with joy, tingling with the sweet aroma of chocolate. As the soft bread particles dissolve in my saliva, I hold up the doughnut for another bite. This time I go for a bigger one, my teeth break through the icing and slowly pass the bread. I gr adually repeat my actions on the rest of the doughnut. Once I finish I crave more.

Primary Source Annotation Assignment about women history in USA Essay

Primary Source Annotation Assignment about women history in USA - Essay Example In his defense of what he considers a woman’s practice, he establishes the origin of man-midwifery as a â€Å"fashion first set by the court prostitute of Paris† in December 1663. He urges the Bostonians not to accept the practice of man-midwifery and instead urges women to advertise themselves in the papers as practitioners of the art. The fact that Gregory finds it important to offer such a strong defense in favor of women is a statement that women in the colonial era were not regarded as qualified enough to perform â€Å"obstetric art† (15). He also alludes to the fact that most husbands, wives, and daughters were not at ease with male mid-wives as â€Å"the husband’s monopoly over his wife ceased† (9). The statement clearly shows that man-midwifery was associated with moral decadence and extramarital relations. Several aspects of women in the colonial era emerge Gregory’s paper. First, the fact that it is a man championing the rights of women to monopolize the practice of midwifery means that women at the time were not in a position to argue for themselves. This could be as a result of lack of training and education. Gregory applauds efforts from Paris where an institution was established to train women on midwifery practices. He suggests that such an institution should be established in Boston. The growing custom of man-midwifery or accoucheurs was seen as a â€Å"war against women [which was] prosecuted with the same vigor [in Boston] as in England† (11). This shows that even as early as 1840, women were still struggling to be recognized as an important part of the society. Those who supported women to take up the midwifery roles sought to embrace the long standing tradition that was established in England and Europe as a whole. At first Gregory points to instances where women in the past have taken the task of helping fellow women deliver. He associates the

Reflection to ANMC Codes Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Reflection to ANMC Codes - Assignment Example Thus the use of reflective nursing practice has been associated with the positive improvement in the practice and attitude of the nurses’ hence better care is provided (James and Freshwater, 2005). Professional practice Nursing students are trained through apprenticeship as they are taught the skills in a classroom setup before they are shown how to use them in care giving. The practice of the nursing knowledge and skills is done in a hospital setup under the guidance of an instructor. The clinical setup has often been a source of reflective ideas towards improvement of individual student in their bid for professionalism (James and Freshwater, 2005). A student during a post-clinical briefing and counseling session disclosed the following event that she finds to have helped him develop professionally. That one day during the normal daily activities a client was admitted into the ward he was. He develop a concern in the reason for the patients admission hence went in to learn mo re from the history documented about the patient. The history he found was poorly taken hence decided to take his own history from the patient. The patient had been stabilized and was under monitoring. The patient was on infusion antibiotics (penicillin) yet he was developing fever which was spiking. The student found out from the history he got that the patient was allergic to penicillin and hence he could link the spiking fever to a hypersensitivity reaction. He quickly went to the instructors and informed them of his findings hence a corrective action was taken thus the patient was safe and recuperated well (James and Freshwater, 2005). While reflecting on that day’s events, he noted that his concern for the patient and incorporation of his knowledge in the clinical practice helped identify the cause of poor response to medication and hence salvaged the situation. This event helped the student realize the importance of history taking in health care provision and hence a bo ot towards his professional practices (James and Freshwater, 2005). Critical thinking and analysis Critical thinking and analysis is core to the nursing practice. Critical thinking is the ability to identify a need and develop a solution within the shortest time.it involves analysis of the possible solutions available and picking on the best option at for the good of the patient. A nurse has to continually think critically while handling the different patients with different needs hence analysis skills are very important for the nurse.in medical practice, the analysis and prioritizing criteria employed is referred to as triage. The triaging process involves critical thinking and analysis of the different conditions the patients are presenting with in order to classify them in order of their need for care and their mortality (James and Freshwater, 2005). A student in the casualty is often faced with psychological trauma when they are expected to identify the patients in order of thei r needs for consultation. It is difficult to side-line a patient who feels they need urgent care and that their lives are in danger. The triaging process was introduced in the hospitals to provide for a criterion through which the patients may be assessed to determine their urgency for care. This initiative was met with a lot of
